MAMMAL
February 6th 19:40-20:30 February 6th 20:40-21:30 FRAS 2
Jojo tries to connect to the modern ape (who lives in big European cities and is addicted to iPads), performing her ongoing training program of eating raw onions and embodying captivity.
MAMMAL uses both video and performance, showcasing practices of "humanizing" apes, constituting that the modern ape is one who is as different from its wild counterparts as we are. The performer sets up an enclosure in which she performs captivity, on a bed of hay with a lone rope hanging, embodying boredom and eating onions. The performance is a futile attempt at relating to an animal she will only ever see in a box behind glass.
Jojo Knowles (SWE/USA) is a conceptual artist urging us all to become more animal in the midst of ecological crisis. She is a member of the artist initiative Billytown.
