Timon Persoon & Annabel Koele

Even when I’m dreaming, I hear sounds

February 5th 20:50-21:20 FRAS 1

Inspired by the concepts of compression and noise pollution, Timon Persoon and Annabel Koele present their first collaboration at Come Together. Approaching this research from their distinct backgrounds, they aim to learn from each other's expertise and ways of creating.

In this work in progress, they explore the fine line between sound that is perceived as unpleasant noise and sound that soothes the mind, with two bodies in space contrasting or amplifying this experience. The inspiration for this work was drawn from city birds adapting their pitch and rhythm to communicate within their surroundings, as the impact of noise pollution and the absence of silence in our daily lives is something we often fail to recognize. Could this phenomenon contribute to a restless city, filled with restless bodies carrying restless minds?

Falling awake in noise
Falling apart in noise
Finding silence in noise
Falling asleep in noise
Fighting noise with noise

Both makers approach noise and compression from their respective disciplines. Timon explores how harmonic tones and rhythmical textures emerge from noisy field recordings. He creates landscapes of abstract noise, blended with recognizable sounds, which together form a dreamlike atmosphere. As for Annabel, noise is translated into a physical, compressed, and performative distortion. She seeks surrealistic images, poetic contradictions, and transformations within the body and space to open the door to new interpretations of auditory layers.

Timon Persoon is a composer and sound performance artist based in Amsterdam. After studying Pop at the Conservatory of Amsterdam he received his MA in Composition at the Conservatory of Utrecht. Live sound in relation to the performative space and the moving body is central to his work, in which he explores how sound can be the carrier of fiction. His particular interest lies in the movement of sound through space as well as sound itself creating an imaginative space. These fascinations have grown within various collaborations in the interdisciplinary field over the past years.

Annabel Koele is a performer, mimer, dancer and maker, creating physical performances in which she challenges our common perception of time and reality. After finishing her dance education at Codarts, Annabel has continued her search for physical performance at the Mime School in Amsterdam. By focussing on bringing both disciplines together, she now researches the instrument of the body for creating surrealistic and absurd images which turn into imaginative stories. This is also the core of her last solo creation ‘MAGNITUDE’, which went on tour throughout the Netherlands, after having received the Top Naeff Prijs as an ATD graduate in 2024.
