THE BEGINNINGS

'How to draw a Pony' is a Drawing Improvisations initiative - research, experimentation and educational platform. Launched in 2018 and being developed by the visual artists - Emilia Grzeczka and Paulina Prokop - based in Amsterdam. Emilia Grzeczka is an artist, mostly focused on creating moving images within the field of visual art. Appreciates working with material, which is not strictly planned and neat, not isolated from chaos and randomness. Her moving images often interact with attention and sensibility. Intrigued by the phenomenon of GIFs, made several pieces in reference to its specific movement-aesthetics. Her works exhibited in the whole cycles often generate a particular aura in the relations to each other and the space. She is an alumna of the University of Arts in Poznan. Bachelor of Art at Scenography and Master of Art at Painting. Honored by The Cultural Scholarship by Marshal of Wielkopolska Region 2015 and The Scholarship of Polish Ministry of Culture and National Heritage 2017. She is a co-founder of ‘How to draw a Pony‘ - drawing improvisations initiative, which she develops from 2018 in Amsterdam. Paulina Prokop (1989, PL/NL) studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Poznan at the department of Stage Design. After four years of study and half a year exchange in Latvia she arrived in Amsterdam to study again. Paulina is a recent graduate of the Scenography department of the Amsterdam School of the Arts. Her graduation performance/installation «Schedule» gave her the opportunity to receive the Harry Wich Scholarship for scenography, offering her further artistic development. Her practices are strongly based on experience in forms of visual art and specifically - drawing. As a source of development towards space and creating she’s referring to movement of “site- specific” as undoubted influence on her practice.

We want to propose a quick play with imagination around the broad theme of the beginning. Participants are encouraged to draw only the very first traces of images, thoughts or dramas. By repeating the action of beginning, they will question the process of linear storytelling. We will use a specific way of folding and passing the papers on to enable the coexistence of different beginnings in a singular frame. As a collective 'How to draw a Pony' we organize drawing improvisations, where we explore possible ways of kicking off and engaging in co-creation. Our aim is to popularise this kind of activity, to experiment and to examine the potential of combination: drawing – improvisation – interaction. We are intrigued by a situation where people do not necessarily know each other and differ in the skillset, knowledge and sensibility yet are placed in a possibility to enter into creative conversations outside the daily rules, habits, rituals and conventions. We are interested in drawing as a basic experience of developing spontaneous processes and drawing together as a way of implementing and investigating post-individualistic approach in the field of visual art.
